Eczema

Eczema

Our providers are here to provide a better understanding of eczema by closely examining your skin and diagnose through allergy testing, blood tests, and biopsies.

Appearance of Eczema

The providers and staff at Paducah Dermatology, explains that eczema is a common, pesky, unsightly skin condition in which red, dry, itchy, flaky, scaly, crusty, patches form on the body with possible bumps. Your skin may look thick and leathery and have swelling in the affected areas.

This condition can take on different colors depending on your skin color, such as purple, brown, gray, pink, or red. Some people have other symptoms or skin appearances. It can develop anywhere on the body. Eczema doesn’t hurt unless you scratch the areas and cause wounds to develop.

Causes

Eczema is a type of dermatitis that causes skin inflammation, with six known types. This condition affects all age groups, usually beginning in infants and young children and continuing into adulthood.

The medical community believes that family history, dermatitis, allergies, hay fever, immunity issues, and asthma can increase your risk.

Although this disease is not contagious, others may shy away from those with it because it looks contagious. Thus, this adverse reaction from some people may lower your self-esteem.
